STAMFORD® PERMANENT MAGNET ALTERNATOR
|
Generating Power through Variable Speed
Cummins Generator Technologies have used their expertise in generator design and manufacture to bring you a new generation of axial flux bearing-free STAMFORD Permanent Magnet Alternators (PMA). Advantages of this development include a substantially smaller footprint by replacing the engine flywheel, high efficiency and use in either fixed or variable speed applications up to 4000 RPM.
Working in conjunction with the STAMFORD Power Conditioning System (PCS) the packager can produce a full variable speed generating set to deliver high quality output power in a very compact package, providing benefits of significantly reduced overall size, weight and fuel consumption.

Features:
- Substantial mass and volume reduction
- High efficiency
- No bearings
- Integrated flywheel replacement
- Compact modular design
- Independent self regulated 3 phase output
- Can operate as a motor or a generator
- High Power/Weight/Torque ratio
- High short circuit handling capability
- Can be used for "drive through" applications
Comparison between STAMFORD PMA and conventional generator offerings:
STAMFORD PMA |
Conventional |
Self regulated without the need for an AVR |
Regulated using an AVR – Can regulate without an AVR but accuracy of control is poor. |
Compact size – VSIG PMA replaces engine flywheel |
Long shaft mounted – Alternator couples to the engine flywheel |
Efficiency > 94% |
Efficiency < 90% |
Can run as motor or generator |
Generator operation only (unless modified) |
Can accommodate “drive through” to provide mechanical power after the VSIG PMA |
Generally no “drive through” capability (unless modified) |
Higher power / weight / torque ratio |
Typically > 2 x heavier |
Simple mechanical design, no bearing |
Requires 1 or 2 bearings |
Self cooled – no derate up to 65°C |
Fan cooled – derate above 40°C |
